IGCP 572 Annual Field workshop in Antalya, Southern Turkey, 3rd-6th September, 2009

IGCP 572 is organizing a field workshop in Antalya area, Southern Turkey in September, 2009.

The Field workshop aims to investigate the recovery of ecosystems following the end-Permian mass extinction based on fossil records from the carbonate platform successions in the NeoTethys region. One-day meeting is organized at the Engineering faculty Akdeniz University in Antalya where Aymon Baud will introduce the field trips. We also propose to have open discussions addressing issues such as recovery patterns of various fossil groups, reconstruction of global P-Tr oceanic and climatic conditions, outline of the P/Tr ecosystem types, and correlation of various data with a global stratigraphic framework. This meeting also allows a short presentation from each participant as well as casual discussions on any topics relevant to the IGCP 572 among project members. The fieldtrip will offer participants a unique opportunity to visit the magnificent outcrops of the Taurus Mountains that provide unparalleled access to the Permian-Triassic platform carbonate in the Neo-Tethyan Ocean. This fieldwork will be dedicated to the Memory of Jean Marcoux, who studied and mapped in great detail the geology of the area and promoted Permian and Triassic studies. The event convenors: Erdal Kosun, Sylvie Crasquin, Aymon Baud, Steve Kershaw, & Sylvain Richoz The 1st Circular for this event is attached here. IGCP 572 is sponsoring this field workshop. A small amount of money is available to help defray field excursion costs for project members who are interested in participating in this event. If you are interested in applying for funds from the IGCP, please contact Dr. Sylvie Crasquin as your earliest convenience as the participant number for the field trip is limited.

Fossil of the month

Hi IGCP572 Fellows,

I try to upload some photos for these problematic fossils from the P/Tr transition and attempt to update the photos every two months. Please give your comments in the Debate/Forum item. I also hope you can contribute some interesting photos relevant to the IGCP 572 and let other members share your experience in working on the P/Tr issues.

What is this (Trace fossil or something else)?

Introduction

IGCP572 is a Unesco-IUGS funded project. Its goal is to study the recovery of marine organisms and their ecosystems following the biggest of the five mass extinctions in Geological history - the Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction.

Marine Fauna252 million years ago marine ecosystems suffered major extinction from factors such as increased carbon dioxide concentrations, loss of oxygen in the oceans, carbon dioxide poisoning and rapid global warming. Researchers on this project will consider how marine ecosystems recovered after this ecologic crisis. Their discoveries may help us to respond to current global concerns such as sustainable use of global biodiversity, biodiversity response to global warming and keeping our planet environmentally sustainable.
